2013 California Title 24 Overview: More Control

Michael Jouaneh is manager of sustainability and energy standards for Lutron, the world leader in light control solutions. Michael is a frequent presenter at industry events such as Lightfair International and Greenbuild, and is active in the development of the top energy and green building codes/standards for the U.S. He is also the author of several published articles, whitepapers, and case studies on high-performance, energy-efficient green buildings. Michael is the vice chair of the Lighting Controls Association, and is involved with many organizations, including ASHRAE, the California Energy Commission, National Electrical Manufacturers Association, Illuminating Engineering Society, International Code Council, and the U.S. Green Building Council. Michael is a Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and a LEED AP. He holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Colorado and an M.B.A. from Drexel University.
Learning Objectives:
- By reviewing U.S. Department of Energy data, the participant will be able to describe the importance of energy conservation in buildings and how light control significantly helps
- By comparing Title 24 2008 to Title 24 2013, the participant will be able to identify the key changes in Title 24 2013 with regards to lighting and controls.
- Using California's 2013 Building Energy Efficiency Standards (Title 24 2013), the participant will be able to determine how lighting controls help meet mandated requirements for new construction, additions, or alterations of nonresidential buildings.
- Through examination of the provided case study, the participant will be able to describe how the Energy Foundation used lighting controls to save energy and meet Title 24 requirements.

 Teal Brogden – Senior Principal of Horton Lees Brogden Lighting Design
Teal is a practice leader in HLB's urban portfolio of projects, which is fueled by her love of travel and culture. Her travels have developed in her a deep understanding of the impact that light can bring to the urban experience. She has been a creative partner in performing arts venues, museums, transportation centers, hospitality, healthcare, corporate and mixed-use developments, universities, lab/research facilities, parks and historic cultural centers.
 Anita Chagaris – Director of Marketing for Kaplan Gehring McCarroll Architectural Lighting
In 2013, Anita co-wrote the book "Garage Sale Gourmet, Streetwise Shopping for Fun, Profit and Home Improvement." It was this that began her two year marketing campaign promoting her book across the states. Prior to committing her career to marketing, Anita began her journey in the field of Interior Design. In 2005, Anita joined KGM Architectural Lighting as the Director of Marketing and Network Administrator. With her background in Interior Design, experience in public speaking promoting her book and knowledge of software and program administration, she was able to undertake all aspects of marketing.
 Sean O'Connor – Principal of Sean O'Connor Lighting
Sean O'Connor recognized the power of light and shadow as a student of architecture. Since establishing his firm, Sean O'Connor Lighting, fifteen years ago, Mr. O'Connor has developed an award-winning body of work which defines spaces, their character, identity, and beauty through the use of light. Mr. O'Connor works in close collaboration with architects, interior designers, and owners to implement integrated lighting systems that create atmosphere and emotion to reinforce the project vision. He is a frequent speaker on lighting design, having lectured to architecture, interior design, and lighting design professionals and students at events including Neocon, Lightfair International, Designers Lighting Forum, Illuminating Engineering Society, General Electric Nela Park, and the Philips Retail Lighting Leadership Forum. Obsessed with form and function, Sean has also designed a wide range of lighting products for leading architectural lighting manufacturers, having received the Lightfair International Innovation Award for three consecutive years.
 Mark Seegel – Principal of Levine/Seegel Associates
Mark Seegel has over 40 years of experience in the design of electrical systems for commercial, institutional facilities, and interior design development projects and evaluation of existing building systems.

2013 California Title 24 Changes: Presentation, Panel Discussion, and Q&A

For the past 25+ years, Charles has worked with engineers, contractors, distributors, and owners to design, specify, and start up Lighting Control Systems for almost every kind of Commercial and Industrial project. The products have run the gamut from simple standalone occupancy sensors to networked Lighting Control Systems for multi-building campuses. After the systems have been installed, Charles has spent thousands of hours working with the facility engineers ensuring that they are educated on their new systems and are using them to their fullest capabilities. Charles is Watt Stopper's Western Regional Vice President, overseeing all sales activity in the Western Coastal states, and managing five dedicated district managers and sales specialists. Before that, he was the company's Western Technical Manager, working extensively on complex projects involving motion detectors, relay panels, daylighting controls, and integration. Charles has also attended uncounted California Energy Commission meetings during the development of the various Title 24 Energy Codes to provide real world insight to the policy makers and act as an ombudsman for his customers. Most of all, Charles considers himself an educator, and greatly enjoys presenting to groups interested in Lighting Control technologies as well as those needing to understand the nuances of the various energy codes.

If not, consider spending an afternoon with us on Saturday, November 9th from 1:00pm-4:00pm. Charles Knuffke with Wattstopper will give his popular Powerpoint presentation on the topic and will pause for questions and panel discussion on each change. Our goal is to encourage questions and extended discussion along with a panel of local designers (to be announced) to explore creative ways to address the changes. This event will be a more in-depth study of the new Title 24 changes than our November 7th Title 24 Overview event.
We will serve hot hors d'oeuvres with coffee and tea.

Illuminating Engineering Society 19th Annual Lighting Product Show

Once again, the Los Angeles Section is sponsoring the very successful Lighting Product Show and at a new location--the Shrine Expo Center, 700 West 32nd Street, Los Angeles, CA. This year the Show will be on Thursday, February 27, 2014. The attached application will give you all of the information. Space is based on a "first come, first serve" basis. Last year, we were sold out before the end of the year.
Manufacturers need to register through their local sales representative. The maximum number of booth spaces available per representative is 10. We will not allow the allocated spaces to be split up and resold to the manufacturers. Representatives should list complete name of each manufacturer to which a space is to be assigned. Payment must be received by January 3, 2014 or booths will not be reserved.
With the success of this event, we are funding the IES Los Angeles Section Student Education Fund, which consists of the Saul Goldin Memorial Internship Program and the Russell Cole Memorial Design Competition. These education programs have been redesigned to offer diversified opportunities to Southern California students from the design community who are interested in pursuing lighting studies.
